I know my banner sucks right now. I lack some templates for Halloween; I'm currently working on that. I've never really celebrated Halloween because trick-or-treating is not really popular in the Philippines but I'm going to celebrate it in my blog nonetheless.

What better way to celebrate a spooky occasion than reading a great scary book. Sadly, I'm not really into scary stuff. However, I'm going to share to you guys some great books that might match the occasion. Most of them are paranormal, both adult and YA. Of course, hot vampires and werewolves are lurking in the night. Ghosts are also everywhere, hunting you.

Here are some of my hand pick books for the occasion. Some of the serious must try in my shelf. (Click image for synopsis)

A lot of these books have awesome cover that truly matches the Halloween air.

Seventeen-year-old Mitzi and Deuce can recall how many drops of water were on a leaf from a rainstorm five years ago and conversations from last week, month, or year. They have the ability to remember every second of everyday—since birth.

This gift has blessed Mitzi with a history of being sexually assaulted by researchers and abused by her own parents. She trusts no one. Likes no one. Deuce, however, is a high school standout. His gift has made him a superstar on the football field and his memory promises him endless opportunities.

When they both end up at an Alzheimer’s research facility under false proviso, they quickly realize this place isn’t what it seems to be. They endure crazy military-style tests, are forcefully drugged, and complete real-life simulations that haunt them.

Mitzi and Deuce have no idea what the researchers want to do with them or their memories. But one thing is clear: the researchers will go to any lengths to get what they want.

Dawning Apocalypse by Jill Cooper Excerpt

Dawning Apocalypse Excerpt
Behind the backdrop of the moonlight she saw a human form moving, shadowing the movement of several officers on the west side of the building.
“Bob’s still here.” Natalie used their keyword for vampires since the media had dubbed the ‘serial killer’ Pinhole Bob thanks to the marks left on the victims’ necks. “He’s on the move.”
Her ear cleared of static. “Be careful,” Charles Buckle, her guide and old mentor said with a stern sharpness to his voice. She didn’t have a cover story if she got caught and the last thing she needed right now was having her parents awoken in the middle of the night by the police.

The Unseen by J. L. Bryan Excerpt

by J.L. Bryan

Chapter One

Years later, Cassidy would remember the night of the party as her first encounter with the unseen world.  It began with broken glass, blood, and a homemade Ouija board.

The day after Cassidy’s seventeenth birthday, her mother was away at work for the night, inadvertently giving Cassidy the best possible present: a Saturday night alone at the apartment.  Her younger brother Kieran was staying at a friend’s house for the weekend.  Cassidy’s mother had forbidden her to have any guests except for her best friend, Barb.  Boys, as always, were doubly forbidden while Cassidy’s mother was working the night shift at the hotel.  Her mother called her on the land line to make sure she was home—never Cassidy’s cell, always the land line.

Kiss the Tiger Excerpt

The midday sun had heated the air to an unbearable level, and I understood why the word siesta existed in certain hot countries. In fact, it had turned into one of those days where the only thing you want to do is open the refrigerator door and stand in front of it. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I grabbed a quick bite to eat in the cool of the air-conditioned snack bar and returned to my room, intending to stick a film in the DVD player and chill out until the rays lengthened. The opening credits were rolling when there was a knock on the door. It couldn’t be the maid. When I’d returned, the bed was made and my top had gone to the big dumpster in the sky.

Review: Honor's Splendour by Julie Garwood

Title: Honor's Splendour
Author: Julie Garwood
Series: N/A
Genre:Historical, Romance

Duncan, the Baron of Wexton or also known as, the Wolf, will get his revenge on Baron Louddon for dishonoring his sister. He planned to invade Louddon's fortress and capture his sister, Madelyne, an eye-for-an-eye. However, his plan changed when a girl came out in the dead cold to free him and warm his feet. He could not distance himself to the girl no matter how much he wants to. His captive might have been the one to capture him.

Madelyne could never stomach her brother's cruel heart. She has been subjected to his abuse for years. She learned one thing with his brother, which is to hide her emotions. Madelyne planned to escape his brother and live with her cousin. However, saving the man strapped to the post, prevented her from doing so. Being captive to the feared Wolf made Madelyne want somethings she couldn't attain: love, safety, and freedom.

This is actually the second time I read this book. I seriously couldn't remember anything about the story so it was like reading it all over again. It also made me reevaluate my judgement about Julie Garwood's books. I think I may be mistaken about my previous comments and expectations for Julie.

Review: Castles by Julie Garwood

Title: Castles
Author: Julie Garwood
Series: Crown's Spies series book 4
Genre: Historical, Romance

Princess Alesandra was orphaned at a young age. She lived in a covent and learned everything from the nuns. However, a letter arrived from Alesandra's guardian, Henry, that she is in danger. General Ivan wants to marry her no matter what. Alesandra packed her bags and went to find a husband in London to stop the threats General Ivan poses. She tried to live with her guardian and her wife but they suddenly got ill, as well as Caine & Jade, so she was sent to stay with Colin.

Colin doesn't have marriage in mind, even when his parents keep on making matches for him. He planned to make his and Nathan's shipping company prosper first before anything else. However, a princess stepped into his house and changed everything. He and Alesandra were to be betrothed. Colin accepted thinking of duty and her protection. However, deceiving himself is not an option anymore when he can't separate himself from her wife.

I had a little trouble reading this book and writing this review. My friend told me that she hated Castles and it ruined Julie Garwood's name for her. I don't know if I was bias already or not (I think I wasn't) but I seriously got irritated with this book. First of all, knowing that it was Colin's book, I already had a bad feeling. Don't get me wrong I like Colin in the previous books. However, it has been my experience when an author uses a minor character for spin off, they aren't all that great, and I had that exact feeling with this book.

Review: Guardian Angel by Julie Garwood

Title: Guardian Angel
Author: Julie Garwood
Series: Crown's Spies series book 2
Genre: Historical, Romance

Caine, the Marquess of Cainewood, vowed to avenge the death of his little brother, Colin. He will kill Pagan, the pirate responsible for the death of his brother. Pagan is a notorious pirate who stole from the rich and gives it to the poor, leaving behind a white rose as his message.

Caine tried to pretend to be Pagan to lure him out. Every night he stays in the tavern and waits for him. One night, a beautiful lady, Jade, was looking for Pagan. She tried to hire Caine to kill her because of the people after her. Caine was reluctant to do so and promised the girl that he will protect her until her brother, Nathan returns. The more time they spend together, the more they are drawn to each other. However, it seems the timid and bad mouthed girl isn't the one in need of his protection. Jade is keeping a secret that might destroy the attraction they have.

I've missed Julie Garwood! It's been so long since I've read one of her books and it's damn refreshing. I'm quite happy that I managed to get a copy of most of Julie's historical romance books a few days ago. To tell you, it has been a long long search. I'm actually almost done with all of them, after my addiction to Julie's book the last time. However, I think I will be repeating them to refresh my memory and write some reviews. Also, they are just that darn great. Sorry for the swearing. Jade is seriously rubbing off me :)))). I could seriously say that Julie Garwood is one of the best plot makers of historical romance. She has the substance and the great story. Though sometimes, not so great ending. This author could come up with the best background story and climaxes.

Review: Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake

Title: Nightwalker
Author: Jocelynn Drake
Series: Dark Days series book 1
Genre: Urban fantasy (Vampires, Werewolf, Faeries, Witches & Warlocks)

Mira is the feared fire wielding nightwalker (vampire). She is the keeper of the nightwalkers in Savannah, which is her domain. She protects the secret of the nightwalkers from the human, killing those who threatens to expose them. However, a new threat arises in her city. A vampire hunter, Danaus, is killing her kind and it is her job to deal with him.

Encountering the vampire hunter intrigued Mira. She doesn't know what this powerful being is and what he knows about her people and her past. Also, Danaus seems to be intrigued by her, as well. Mira wasn't able to kill the man after mentioning the "naturi". The single word opened up memories & nightmares that Mira tries to suppress. Their old enemies seems to be on the move again to destroy both vampires and mankind. Another war is coming and Mira doesn't know if she could survive another war with the naturis. She also do not know if she could trust anyone around her, including Danaus.

I'm so happy that I managed to read another good urban fantasy book. Reading young adult for tour reviews haven't been that satisfying. I'm still not done with my addiction to urban fantasy and I don't now when it will end.

Back to the book, what attracted me to the series was Mira being a fire wielder. I have this thing for elemental powers and I thought the plot was interesting enough, which is actually true. There were some interesting revelations in this book that I didn't anticipate. The betrayals and lies that are happening were quite shocking and interesting. I seriously pitied Mira by the end of the book, which you'll find out if you give this book a chance. The flow was great. Each chapter contains a lot of excitement in it. I had a hard time putting the book down so I could do other stuff, like sleep.
