Review: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Title: Magic Bites
Author: Ilona Andrews
Series: Kate Daniels series book 1
Genre: Urban fantasy (Vampires, Weres, Witches), Mythology

Kate Daniels is a Guild mercenary, who cleans up magical problems, with her magic and blade, Slayer. She tries to keep a low profile by doing some simple work for the Guild to pay the bills. However, everything changes when she found out that her guardian died. Kate would do anything to kill the person responsible for killing her only family, even partnering with the Order, which she swore never to do.

She went to Atlanta to investigate and finds herself stuck in a power struggle between the People, who are vampire controlling, business-minded, necromancers, and the Pack, who are a group of military-like shapeshifter. It seems that this mission is way harder than what Kate thought, getting her into situations that she, herself, might not be able to live through.

I was super excited to read this book because of the high ratings it got in Goodreads and I wasn't disappointed. It is full of adrenaline pumping fights and cute hot guys <3.

Kate Daniels isn't your average witch. She could break your neck or gut you with her sword, killing you in 2 seconds flat. She lives in a dangerous world where electricity fails due to magic overload, vampires could drain you dry, shapeshifter could tear you to pieces, worms could regenerate endlessly, and words could kill instantly. She is super smart, sarcastic, and fearless. She is your perfect heroine. What I love about Kate is that she is super kick-ass. She won't go down without a fight no matter what. Though, the funny part about this book is that, considering she is a witch, she doesn't really do that much magic. It's fine by me because she could hold herself just fine. I'm just weirded out by the idea.

Review: Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning

Title: Darkfever
Author: Karen Marie Moning
Series: Fever series book 1
Genre: Urban fantasy (Fairy, Vampires)
Status: Dropped

MacKayla Lane is your Barbie doll come to life. She has long straight blond hair. Her nails are painted pink and her clothes are derived from the rainbow. Life has been really perfect for Mac, loving parents and sister, great friends, & good enough job. However, everything seems to change for Mac, after getting a phone call that her sister was murdered in Ireland. Her parents are stuck in their own misery and the police won't continue the case of her sister. It is Mac's job to try and convince the police to reopen her sister's case (typical). She left everything and went to Ireland, after a few spats with her parents, with only a message from her sister, telling her to look for Sinsar Dubh.

In Ireland, Mac wasn't having the best time of her life. People are quite hostile with her and weird stuffs are happening. She sees hideous creatures that are trying to pass as humans to feed off their life, beauty, body, etc. and they seem to be hunting her kind, sidhe-seer, who is not affected by Fae glamour, down. Mac doesn't know a thing about her hidden heritage and she keeps on getting herself into tight situations. Through her multiple incidents, she managed to stumble upon Jericho Barren, a book shop owner and artifact & car collector. It seems that this mysterious man is the only thing/person that could help Mac survives her new world and look for her sister's murderer. Ireland didn't just take her sister away from her but her perfect life, as well.

I was super excited to read this book because it has a really high rating in Goodreads but I was seriously wrong. (Sorry but I'm just going to rant about this book because that is how frustrated I feel right now.) Before I go through any details, I would just like to say that this book further killed my interest in faery themed books. It actually started off in "Wicked Lovely" by Melissa Marr. This is my first faery book. I don't want to go to any more details. Long story short it ruined it for me. I've been trying to avoid this genre ever since. However, the Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa managed to lessen my dislike for the said genre which leads to me opening this book. Another bad idea!

Help the People in Zamboanga!

I hope you guys are aware of what is happening to Zamboanga, Philippines. Thousands of people are being evacuated because of the tension between the MNLF and the Philippine military. Multiple properties are being destroyed. Innocent people are getting injured and some are even dying. Schools, shops, etc. are all shut down. Everyone is afraid for their own and their love ones lives.

Most of the evacuated people are currently staying in evacuation centers, like covered courts, leaving behind everything they had. They are in dire need of help. It's not like we need to give them money to be able to help. Any form of help is really appreciated, like food, clothes, medicine, toys, school supplies, etc.

These items would greatly help the people in need and somehow this will lift their hopes up that people are trying to help them.

Since my financial state does not permit me to give money donations, I thought of giving them something that I have, my books. Most of these books are given to me through giveaways. I really don't have the interest in reading them and was planning of selling them to make some money. However, I think the people in Zamboanga, mostly the children, are in more need of these. I know it's not much but I hope that I could help them in anyway that I can.

You may ask why can't I just give them stuff like clothes. I don't really have clothes that I could donate anymore because most of my old clothes were donated during the habagat, last year.

Hope you guys could help out too! Any help given no matter how small is appreciated :) Through my blog, I hope the I could help out a little, no matter how irrelevant or small my blog is.

Review: Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones

Title: Fifth Grave Past the Light
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 5
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons), Romance

Charley Davidson is back in action. Multiple dead women, covered in dirt and oil, are showing up in Charley's apartment. She doesn't know what to do with them, other than trying to evade them to get to her bathroom, because not one of them is making any connection or contact with her, except for the little girl. She needs to solve this case to at least help out the women and know why they were there. On the arsonist case, she worked out the arsonist case. The problem is how she will approach it. She doesn't want the culprit to get hurt and someone will be really mad at her when he finds out that she is planning on turning-in the culprit.

On to her personal problems, Reyes is her new neighbor and new cook as well. Reyes seems to be keeping a close eye on her. Their relationship seems to be moving forward now that they are near each other. However, their is more in Reyes than what meets the eye. Somehow, Reyes is connected to what happened to Garrett. The only question is what.

I SO LOVE THE ENDING OF THIS BOOK!!! It was super unexpected! (Of course, I'm not going to tell you. You need to find out for yourself :P)

The plus side in this book is that their are not much demon talks or attacks. Some mysteries are answered but a few more are added. I seriously don't know where the story about the reaper and Satan is going. It seems that the author haven't really made up her mind yet which totally sucks. The down side is that the main case is not really that well executed. The answers seem to be popping out of no where. Charley didn't really do much about the case in this book. Though, the relationship with Reyes is getting better and better. I just can't wait for Charley's next action.

Coffee Time in UCC

- Special Thanks to Melvin Lam, my cousin, for being our major sponsor ^.^v

The Gang is back with more food!
After being food deprived for a week, we managed to have another quality time and have lunch outside. Our stop was "UCC Vienna Cafe" in Thomas Morato. Yummy and Expensive! (Ya, I know, Thomas Morator seems to be our main spot right now.) We seem to be targeting Japanese restaurants right now. The past was Greek food. (I'll try to make a review on this when we eat there again)
This is only my second time eating here, mostly because of the insane prices. This is like an off-limits restaurant for us, most especially for mom. However, my cousin recommended that we eat here because he and his uncle have lunch here most of the time and they say it's good. So Voila! Here we are! Well equipped with my cousin's credit card :).

Review: Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones

Title: Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 4
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons)

Charley, the grim reaper and incredible PI, is having some time off from her job. After the traumatic case she had last time, she needs to put herself back together, starting with dressing up and leaving her house. A new case has arrived in her door step, which could be good for her recovery. Harper is asking Charley's help because she thinks someone is trying to kill her. Someone is leaving behind dead rabbits on her bed. Charley believes that Harper is not insane, unlike what Harper's stepmother thinks of her.

On the other hand, Charley has yet to bill Reyes for her last case. It seems that Reyes still doesn't care what-so-ever on happens to his body. He is still risking himself for Charley's protection, most especially now, when someone is standing up to be the leader of the demons. Charley needs to get a grip of herself and her powers to be able to keep herself alive.

I like this book. The series is actually getting better and better after each book. So this book contains multiple cases again. (Seriously, I don't know how the author does this but bravo to her. She is a kick ass multi-tasker ) I love her main case in this book. It contains a lot of twist about Harper, Art, her brother, Harper's mother and the suspect. Though, the case wasn't fully explored because of dealing with Charley's personal problems; I still love it. Nobody could resist a good twist in the story.

Review: Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones

Title: Third Grave Dead Ahead
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 3
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons), Romance

After binding Reyes and managing to find Mimi, Charley has a new case. She is hired by Dr. Yost to look for his wife Teresa, whom he might have killed. Dr. Yost seems to be too perfect to be even human. Charley, with the help of Cookie, is trying to prove that her client is the murderer. They found out that the man is a control freak. He would do anything to keep his wife in check, even murdering her and her love ones. Charley needs to look for Teresa before she dies (Of course, Rocket helped her with this).

Other than this case, she encountered the gang who runs the asylum, with the rottweilers. Their dogs are dying and they hired Charley to find out who is poisoning their dogs.

On a more personal case, Charley is trying to prove Reyes' innocence by looking for his dad. Reyes and her are on the same case. It's a matter of who will find him first.

To top it all off, Charley haven't slept for 2 weeks because whenever she gets some shut eye, Reyes is there, who is still super pissed at her.

This book is way more exciting than the second one. Again, this book is combining different cases in one book. Though I didn't really like the main case of Charley, which is the doctor, I love the flow of the story. I love how Charley is not sleeping; it makes everything more interesting. I love how Reyes used Charley as a hostage. It was super funny. Also, there is another torture session!!! I JUST LOVE IT! Though, I pity Charley here, all the guys around her (well most of them) are out to get her and betray her.

Mistress Marigold finally made an appearance, just so you know she is a jolly nun. Weird. The people in asylum is funny, most especially Donovan. He's such a charmer. I think he is a better match for Charley. He is so cute. By the way, I officially hate Reyes now, with what he did to Charley. Also, I think he is an asshole, even though, people say that he is actually nice and just showing a bad attitude. I FREAKING HATE.

PS: I hate this cover and sorry for the short review, my mind is just blank.

Review: Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones

Title: Second Grave on the Left
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 2
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons), Romance

This book just has a great cover.

I took me a long time to actually finish this book because of all my schoolwork but I'm finally done with it. The bad side there is that after reading it for a few days, you tend to forget some parts but I'll try my best to share with you my experience with this book.

One week after Reyes' body disappeared, Charley Davidson, PI and Grim Reaper, has another case. Cookie's, her best friend/ secretary, friend, Mimi is missing. She called Cookie to meet up with her but she didn't show up. Charley found a clue by Mimi in the bathroom of the coffee shop. Nobody knows where she is. Her husband Warren is being questioned for the disappearance of his wife. Not only that but multiple deaths are showing up and they are all connected to Mimi. They all came from the same High School. It seems that they are keeping something that happened in HS and someone is making sure that nothing comes out. Charley needs to solve this case quickly before something happens to Mimi. However, it seems that trouble keeps on finding her. Being tortured and almost killed is not at all easy when you have a case to finish.

Other than the case she is working on, Charley needs to find Reyes' body. Reyes' lips are sealed about the location of his body and it seems that the body isn't in any good shape. Demons are after him and he will try to endure until his body gives out just to protect Charley. However, will Charley be able to find his body before Reyes succeeds in his suicide mission?

This book is quite great. I seriously love the detective work of Charley here. This is not the hardcore type of detective genre but it's really nice. It keeps your heart pumping. Though the story gets confusing at times because of the multiple case Charley is taking, it is still a great story. There are a lot of cool scenes in this book, like the torture and the threat to Charley's life. (YES these are the types of events that I love!) Also, there are far more revelations in this book, with her power, Reyes's identity, her family, etc.

I really love Charley. She is just super funny, even if she is this close to dying, she still makes it super funny. Also, she is not the coward type of girl. I think nothing scares her at all, except Reyes. Though I still doubt her attraction to Reyes, considering the time she actually spent with the guy, I still think she is kick ass and smart.

The only problem with this book is that I know this is an adult urban fantasy, considering the scenes and flow of the story but it seems that the author writes like she is writing a young adult book, which totally sucks, considering that I wanna read some urban fantasy right now. I don't know, maybe it's just me but somehow the author ain't in that level yet. Ya, I think it's just me.

Still a good read though. I just hope that I have the patience to finish this book until the last one.

PS: sorry for the short review. I really have suckish memory. I need to finish a book with in a few days only.

Values Video

I was going through my old files and I found this video that I made during my 3rd year in High School for my Values class. I can't really remember much of the details why we made this but I just thought of sharing it. The passage, which we used, was really interesting and touching though.

Don't judge my editing skills because I know it sucks.. Hahahahahahaha :))

Review: For I Have Sinned by Darynda Jones

Title: For I Have Sinned
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 1.5
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons), Romance

Charley Davidson is trying to help out a dead girl who doesn't remember who she is. It is Charley's job as the Grim Reaper and private investigator to help the dead and let them cross over.

I love this novella. Let me just say that all the doubts I had in the first book were erased because of this one. To make me fall in love with a book, it needs a decent cute guy and this book just proved how cute and charming Reyes can be. I just hope this continues and it's not just some stuff the author wishes to write, which is totally separate from the actual story line.

This is not one of those crap novellas that would make you hate the story.

Review: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

Title: First Grave on the Right
Author: Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson series book 1
Genre: Urban fantasy (Ghosts, Demons), Romance

I was a bit bummed out by this book.

Charlotte, or Charley, Davidson is a private investigator, police consultant and grim reaper. Yes, she is The Grim Reaper. Ever since she was young, Charley could see and touch the dead. They come to her like a homing beacon to seek closure in life and they cross over through her.(Literally)  She is the portal to the other plane or world. Helping out the dead ain't that easy. Charley's current case is about the death of 3 lawyers that is seeking her help. She needs to find the murderer and some missing people related to the case. Though Charley has an advantage, being able to get information from the dead and all, she's still having a hard time looking for the suspect, most especially if she needs to worry about someone trying to murder her. Other than the case, Charley is also trying to investigate a guy named "Reyes", who may or may not be the person she is afraid of and the person saving her life multiple times.

I was so excited to read this book. It is quite great mostly the first few parts. You would be so intrigued about Reyes's and Big Bad's identities that you couldn't put the book down. The investigation was really interesting too because I don't really have a clue on who the suspect is. In here, you could really see how good Charley is in her job. She could find a lost rat in a city if she just put her mind to it. On the other hand, at first, I thought Reyes was the person Charley will end up with but Garrett came along then I thought it was him. I was wrong again. It really was Reyes whom Charley will end up with. This is the forbidden-love kind of story. There are just a lot of questions and mysteries here, which the book would answer. (Well, most of them. Still fair enough) It's really quite exciting. You'll just want to know the answers to your questions about what's happening in the book.

I love Charley. She is just so witty and funny. She is a smart mouth, not in the negative way. She is also super smart. (I hate dumb heroine. It is a crime when authors create dumb heroines) I'm not so keen on Reyes yet. He didn't really talk much in this book. He just sleeps with Charley in her dreams so I can't really judge him yet.

On the other hand, the sad part in this book is that after the revelations, I didn't like the concept the author used. She did the reincarnation, I-was-in-love-with-you-way-before-you-were-born concept which totally sucks. A big chance in this is that they can't really spend that much time together because of their circumstances and they need to fight their way just to be together. Why can't they just be together? Also, I have a hunch that this will be like Charley trying to run after Reyes.

Though this book is still too interesting to give up on. It is also a funny book anyway.

Favorite Quote:
"'My fore-parts, as you so ineloquently put it, have names.' I pointed to my right breast. 'This is Danger.' Then my left. 'And this is Will Robinson. I would appreciate it if you addressed them accordingly.'

After a long pause in which he took the time to blink several times, he asked, 'You named your breasts?'

I turned my back to him with a shrug. 'I named my ovaries, too, but they don't get out as much...'"

I JUST LOVE THIS PART! I was seriously laughing out loud.
PS: I Love the Cover!

Book Shopping

My hands were already itching to buy books for months. I was waiting for the annual sale of National Bookstore during summer but it never came. WHY! That should be a crime! I buy books when it's 20% off to save some money. I don't really buy second hand books because I'm super OC with my books. I don't like worn out books. Their my babies. (I double wrap everything with plastic.)

Good thing that this month, National Bookstore had a sale and I was able to remedy my itching hands and full pockets (Well, not that full :P). Here are some of the books I bought and would be reviewing in the future, after I get over my Urban Fantasy addiction.

Some of them I've already read, like Once and Always by Judith McNaught and Love Story by Erich Segal. These books are totally awesome so I just wanna have them in my collection. The others are sequels to the books I have. I'm so excited to read them already!

Other than that, I also shopped for books in Fully Booked. I thank my cousin for lending me his card to have at least 10% off on my books. I hate it when only Fully Booked have certain books. (Sometimes, it's more expensive here)

Hopefully, I could complete this series. I only need to look for the first and fourth book. I love this series so much!!!!

I love shopping for books. The empty spots in my shelf are starting to fill up again. :)
